How KRF Changed My Life - Carson

I like “Kids Rock Free” because Lee Zimmer is nice and he makes sense. If I don’t understand, he helps me. I get excited when it’s the day of my guitar lesson. When I play I feel happy and relaxed. I’m thinking “I’m doing it!” reading music makes me feel smart. School is complicated for me sometimes but guitar relaxes my brain. I want this guitar because I want to teach my big brother. He usually teaches me, but now I can teach him.

I have been at Fender for three years and I have learned a lot from Lee. Lee has helped me with songs, riffs, and the summer jams. Some of the songs I have learned are Sunshine of Your Love, Beat It, Smoke on the Water, just to name a few. My goals are to be in the KRF Bands. Thank you for providing me with lessons. Rock on Fender!!!

I Love the DRUMS! - Sophie’s Story

Kids Rock Free has really changed my life! I love playing the drums. I’m always keeping a beat to something, or playing in the car, or even on the dinner table. I have been playing for 4 years and it’s my passion. I am recently in a band and it’s been wonderful. I love playing with amazing people, and playing awesome songs. Sometimes when I feel down, I like to play the drums or keep a beat in my head. I always have people saying I have such an amazing talent for how old I am. Sometimes it’s hard like a couple songs or lil things, or rhythms. I always keep my head up and love learning more!

Sophia is 12 years old and she participates in both the Drumline, as well as a band. We’re very happy to have received this story from her.

The Fixer! Billy Purnell at NBC’s The Voice

I got a call from Scooter Braun’s office to come to the set of The Voice at Universal’s back lot to help the band Rixton, particularly their lead singer, Jake Roche, who was going through tonsillitis and bronchitis.  Scooter is manager to Justin Beiber, Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly and others. The band was scheduled to appear as special guest on The Voice that day. He was very ill but I was able to work his voice to a place where he could get through the show, and he nailed it!  I worked with the other two singers also, Danny and Charley. The drummer, Lewis, doesn’t sing. They asked me to do the same on Wednesday for the Ellen DeGeneres show; that one I did over Skype and once again he did an amazing job. They might have me do it again for their show on the 13th at the Roxy in Hollywood.

Billy Purnell is one of Southern California’s most sought after voice teachers. His list of clients includes major and indie label recording artists, television and film stars from the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon Broadway, and others.  He is the creator of the Ultimate Voice Training for Singers home-study singing program that has sold in over 75 countries around the world, and Billy has taught private lessons across the United States,  Japan, Australia, Holland, the Caribbean, and Hungary. In addition to teaching here at the Fender Center for the Performing Arts.
